The 4 months I spent on the psychiatric unit went by pretty quickly. I don't remember most of my time there. Not sure whether that's because I was so ill at the time, or whether it was down to being on certain medication.
Something really significant happened about 3 months into my time there. I remember this particular event as if it was only yesterday. I was walking down the main coridoor towards the smoke room, when all of a sudden I was stopped in my tracks. A scene entered my mind so clearly it was as if it was happening right in front of me. It wasn't just something I saw though. I could hear everything that was going on in this scene, I could smell it and I could feel it. Let me tell you, it hurt me. I immediately knew that this was a flashback to my earlier years. My "happy" childhood suddenly became a childhood I'd created in my mind to help me forget the pain that I was put through.
I was honest with the staff on the unit, and with my family about what was going on. The one thing I refused to tell people, was who this person was. I couldn't let them in on who it was who was hurting me in these flashbacks.
A month later and I was discharged. I moved back to my mums and my mental health care was transferred back to my home town. A few months passed and I was called in for an assessment. More waiting after that before I finally got an appointment through to start seeing a psychologist.
